Licensure

Licensure for the practice of osteopathic medicine is granted on a state-by-state basis. Graduation from a fully accredited college of osteopathic medicine is one of the basic requirements for licensure as an osteopathic physician in all 50 states. The Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (the “KansasCOM”) received Pre-Accreditation status in December 2021 from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). Pre-Accreditation, as distinct from full accreditation, permits the KansasCOM to solicit applications and admit students, offer medical instruction within the approved osteopathic medical curriculum, and announce its Pre-Accreditation Status. In accordance with COCA requirements, KansasCOM is eligible for full accreditation status following the graduation of its first class, which it anticipates will occur in May 2026. The attainment of full accreditation status is subject to review and approval by COCA. If the KansasCOM is granted full accreditation status in 2026 by COCA, the decision will be retroactively applied to include its first graduating class of students and, at that time, its Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Program will be determined to meet the educational prerequisites for licensure as an osteopathic physician in all 50 states.

The KansasCOM Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program is designed to meet the educational requirements for licensure as an osteopathic physician in the following states and district: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

KansasCOM has not made a determination that its Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine curriculum meets the educational requirements for licensure or certification in the following U.S. territories: the American Samoa, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau.

Each student should check the additional licensure requirements for the state, district, or territory in which they intend to pursue licensure.
